My wife does sober months a couple times a year, meanwhile I’ve never tried.

So I figure, why not.

I’ll spend less money on beer , also spend less money on eating out, sleep better, and also I guess save some organs briefly. If I make it even 10 days without a drink, I’d call it a success by my standards. Baby steps.

My alcohol intake is always higher from September through New Years, compared to the other three seasons . As I get older, my body is resisting and my intake has been falling steadily.

Besides, there are other liquid weaknesses on hand now...

My son said I couldn’t go a week without beer. I said I’d abstain from alcohol for lent next year. That means no beer for 40 days. My God, what have I done?

A sober month in November? Good for you guys. I don’t drink very much but holidays are a time I usually do so that seems challenging. Our homemade eggnog is very highly alcoholic but I do like the Darigold stuff for less festive occasions.

growing up my dad used to pay us monthly to not drink soda in the summers. I t was $30 a month. It was a good deal, but I found more than $30 of enjoyment in soda.  I’ve tried to go off soda cold like that again and it always ends up in a bing, so I’ve just had to make moderation as a daily goal.

My siblings don’t drink obviously, but it’s hilarious to see how much soda they guzzle down when they visit. My SIL drinks like five Dr. Peppers a day. I'm like, man, you just had the equivalent of 8 cups of coffee in caffeine and an entire bag of granulated sugar.

We do alcohol free days... Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Every week. It’s much easier than even trying for a whole month when you are someone who is a regular consumer of alcoholic beverages.

Egg nog...does it actually have eggs or egg derived products in it?

It’s funny how you get used to the sugar--- but when you give it up completely--  wow it’s sweet.  I’ll have a couple of Cokes a year probably at this point, and can hardly finish a 12 oz can when I try one, usually when there’s just nothing else to drink around.

I actually gave up soda for several years at one point. Prior to that I had gotten to a point where it was almost all I drank. I never managed with efforts at merely cutting back. I still don’t drink more than 1 or 2 a week now.

No worries though, I didn’t do anything crazy like switching to all water and become healthy. Instead I now drink far more coffee than could conceivably be healthy.

Did you specifically say beer? If so there are plenty of excellent hard ciders to substitute. Or you could say if it doesn’t technically meet the old German beer purity laws it doesn’t count.

It’ll be an excellent opportunity for a lesson on semantics.

Kroger has had egg nog for over a month now. I’ll grab my annual bottle nearer the end of the month.

Next year I vow to finally make a batch.

I think outside of going to the place I store all my cars, I’ve left my apartment six times since October 1st.

If I remember right, Southern Comfort has their own brand of egg nog which I found to be very good, even without SoCo mixed in.

I dropped cokes on a dare for Lent one year. I wasn’t even Catholic, but two of my friends were.

The first week was awful. I went from 6+ per day to zero. I had all the withdrawal symptoms - shakes, nausea, headaches, etc. That first coke after forty days was heaven!

I really like the egg nog from Evan Williams myself.

There’s a recipe from Alton Brown for homemade egg nog I’ve wanted to make but never have due to lack of fridge space. I’m finally getting the garage sorted so we have room for a fridge in there so I’ll have room next year.

I love eggnog, but it’s better that it not come into our house.

I did have an eggnog milkshake the other day, though. That might have to be the limit of my intake this season... but I won’t turn it down if it’s offered to me.

Exactly the one! My plan is to make a double batch next year. I figure that way I can give some out as gifts, drink some as it ages, and most likely still have a little left on Christmas.

I gave up sugar for a while in my early 20's.  I didn’t notice a difference worth giving up the sweetness for.  Could be different now though.

Im in a spot where I drink too much right now, but Im trying to turn it into more of a treat.  Though I’ve gotten in the habit of a Diet Mt. Dew in the mornings as my coffee of sorts.

I try to keep myself at the spot where I don’t need caffeine to function, and it actually affects me when I drink it. I generally wean myself off of it in the summer (no desire for a warm coffee on a warm morning). Our office getting rid of the stash in the break room has helped get me off the afternoon soda habit I had for a while, which was probably more about the sweet than the caffeine.

I wouldn’t say I need the caffeine, it’ s more that it’ s just a nice drink with OJ. People conflate coffee and soda for Caffeine and they are n’t very comparable .

8 oz of coffee has 95 mg of caffeine , 12 oz of mt dew has 54 mg. it would take nearly 2 cans of Mt Dew for one small black coffee.

Monster has bloody 120 mg/12 oz. of course espresso has about 94 mg/oz.

Im still at the point that I can’t have a soda past 6 or I can’t sleep.

Would be an interesting experiment for you to go a week without it to see if you notice any effects at all from being without it.

I’ve never really had the issue of caffeine messing with my sleep (I enjoy a coffee with dessert sometimes after a nice meal).

I can consume caffeine (usually in the form of coke ) until bedtime and still sleep like a baby. My wife says that it’s a clear indication there is something wrong with me. :)

If you find it difficult to not-drink, I think that’s a sign that it’s important that you not-drink for a while.

Egg nog on the other hand, sign me up!
